I love painting, and drawing, and also love photography.. For many years, I've been looking for the right support for my works. I limited room in my basement. I also don't like buying things except in bulk. This morning I came across this blog posting that suggests using masonite and panel board:

I love this idea. I have used masonite before, but never to do a lot with. In college, I used the back of it for a chracoal or pastel drawing or two, but never got in to it heavy duty because I was worried about how many years it would hold up. Also, masonite absorbs gesso like a sponge. This guy's idea of using panel board that's pre-primed is awesome. It is definitely something I'm going to look in to. I am very hard on my art supports that I use pastels, charcoals, and colored pencil on. I have not even touched pastels or charcoal for several years since they are so dirty, messy, and throw so much dust in the air that can be inhaled, and I never had any way of supporting them really. With colored pencils, I love layers, but papers can only accept so many layers before tooth breaks down or paper tears or wrinkles badly. I think going to panel board is the right path for me to take. It would be able to be cut down to a size that it can fit on my 8x11" scanner... which is something that I've been looking for since I want to be able to scan my artwork so I can upload it with really fine details... and it would be strong enough to take a lot of abuse.
Sometimes when I get to doing pointillism type effects and things with colored pencils or pastel, I literally have bounced the colored pencils or pastels against the surface like a drummer stick to get a lot of little dots with different colors in one area, etc.
When I layer colored pencil, right now, I'm starting with a layer of erasable color pencil (usually Crayola), layer it good for a base surface, erase it out to lighten that up areas, then go after a second layer with more heavy erasable color pencils.... I have not done a lot past that, but my ultimate goal is to then go over that with another layer of cheap color pencils such as non-erasable Crayola Color Pencils, and then finally, in the areas that need lots of pigment, go over that with some expensive Prismacolors, and then, in the areas on top of that finally maybe go in with some China Markers to reinforce a few detail areas here and there... So far, I've found that Sketchbook Paper is only letting me get to about the end of the Erasable color pencil stage of all of this prior to getting to a point that the paper is starting to breakdown in tooth or with wrinkles.
Masonite or Panel board should be able to take that sort of abuse without any problems. Also, it'd be versatile enough to be used with paintings as well as drawings, and, I think, with enough fixative, the back of a masonite panel should have more than enough teeth to hold charcoal or pastel down for many, many years.
The only issue I'm still worried about and not too sure about is how many art history years masonite will hold up, or if it will deteriorate over time due to the fact that it is probably not acid free... but if I'm working on small enough pieces that it can be scanned at something like 700 dpi at 100% size, that should not matter much since the work will be in a digital format, and that digital format can be used to make duplicates on cafepress, lulu, or other digital printing places?...
